English language teaching and English-medium instruction

Abstract The role of English language teaching (ELT) in English-medium instruction (EMI) can vary widely depending on education policy objectives and teachers’ responses to EMI students’ learning needs. In this paper, we provide a narrative review growing number studies reporting language-related challenges as the foremost barrier successful implementation EMI. Such research highlights fundamental roles that for Academic Purposes (EAP) Specific have provision targeted support students. Based review, set future agenda, calling explorations into efficacy programs supporting students reach educational outcomes. We also call greater collaboration between practitioners content lecturers ensure right type is being provided paper ends with discussion need reposition EAP specific academic needs are met. Essentially, universities offering will account their unique institutional characteristics ELT central organizational curricular structures; otherwise, they may be setting own up fail.
